Is Online Learning Right For Me?

Software Requirements

Internet | Hardware | Software | Virus Protection

 Graphical Web Browser

  • Internet Explorer Browser - recommended
  • Pop-Up Blocking in your Browser should be turned OFF, or s everal course features will not work properly since WebCT uses pop-up windows. If you have a program, such as Norton Security, you will either need to change the settings to accept 'webct.ucf.edu or webcourses.ucf.edu' or turn it off while working on course items. To turn this off in Internet Explorer:
    • Select Tools>Pop-Up Blocker
    • Choose "Turn Off Pop-Up Blocker"
  • Note For AOL users: In order to prevent any potential technical glitch, AOL users may want to minimize AOL browser and pull up the Internet Explorer browser for WebCT courses.

 E-mail Client Program

  • Your e-mail program should be capable of handling MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) binary file attachments.
  • Pegasus Server
UCF's Pegasus Mail Server includes the Pine e-mail program. There is also a web accessible version of Pegasus email. This e-mail can be accessed at https://pegasus.cc.ucf.edu/webmail/
  • Browsers
Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer have internal e-mail capability built in to the browser program.
  • Freestanding E-Mail Programs
There are a number of free-standing e-mail programs available commercially or as shareware. Mozilla Thunderbird and Outlook are two such programs.
  • Note: Internet Service Providers usually have their own e-mail client programs. If you are using hotmail or any other type of e-mail program which limits the size of attachments or the number of items in your mail box, you may run into problems when taking an online course.

 Word Processing

Word processing is a necessity in virtually any college course today. Online students should be prepared to save word processed files as plain (ASCII) text files, to use their programs' copy & paste functions to post their work into e-mail messages and discussion messages, and to attach word processing files to e-mail. Recommended software includes:

  • Microsoft Office 2003 for Windows
  • Microsoft Office 2003 for Macs

 Other

Some courses may require other software programs in addition to those named here. See the course Web pages or consult with the course instructor about additional software requirements before registering for an online learning course.
